On Tuesday 19 March 2024, ACBC Victoria had the pleasure in hosting an exclusive Geo-economics Roundtable with ANU, hosted generously by MaxCap.
At this timely and intimate event, the speakers gave a micro to macro analysis of the geo-economics of Australia and China. Dr Ben Herscovitch started with a deep dive into the current geopolitical developments between the bilateral states, highlighting bright spots amidst potential turbulence for Australian business. He emphasised the need for strategic management of exposure to fast-moving bilateral dynamics.
Following that, Dr Darren Lim provided insights into the evolving approach of the Albanese government towards foreign investments and trade diversification. He thoroughly examined how domestic drivers of policy change in China influence the operating environment for Australian businesses, while also examining Australia’s responses to recent disruptions in the trade relationship.
Professor Anthea Roberts concluded with a macro view of analysing the bilateral relationship, encouraging the audience to view it through coloured lenses, highlighting its complexity and multi-layered nature. She presented a comprehensive analysis of Risks, Rewards, and Resilience in different case studies between the two states, urging a nuanced understanding beyond simplistic black-and-white perspectives.
The speaker’s expertise and passion for their respective fields sparked lively discussions during the Q&A session, proving this roundtable to be an exceptionally enlightening event.
We extend our sincere thanks to Penny, Wayne and Ben at MaxCap for graciously hosting this event at their stunning office. Sincere thanks, ANU, and of course the National Foundation for Australia China Relations for funding the research and event.
