ACBC calls for greater support for exporters to diversify markets
The Australia China Business Council (ACBC) calls for additional support to Australian exporters disproportionately hit by the pandemic and punitive trade measures imposed by China.
Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) is a key Australian government financial assistance program for exporters. It has been critical in supporting the development of many of Australia’s export markets in China.
“A significant number of exporters have exhausted their entitlement to EMDG grants and are struggling to respond to loss of the China market. They need support.” said ACBC National President, David Olsson.
“Through no fault of their own, the China market has been decimated and many companies are no longer eligible for the EMDG funding needed to develop alternative markets.”
“The ACBC welcomes the success of those industries able to secure new markets. But this success should not leave us blind to the plight of those exporters who are not able to pivot as quickly to alternative markets.” David Olsson said.
“Subject to appropriate criteria, eligible companies should have access to a supplementary tranche of EMDG funding to support the development of alternative markets.” The ACBC applauds the success of those industries able to secure alternative markets.
They are grateful beneficiaries of Government support including the Agri-Business Expansion Initiative and the International Freight Assistance Mechanism.
But further support is needed.
