The Ins and Outs of Chinese Outbound Investment

18 Aug 2020

The ACBC QLD Financial Services Industry Working Group, in partnership with King & Wood Mallesons, cordially invites members and friends to join our guest speakers as we discuss the latest updates, opportunities and challenges facing China as a global foreign investor.

We will be joined by Jonathan Grant, Partner of King & Wood Mallesons (KWM), and Karim Issa, Senior Associate of KWM, and Tom Harrison, Senior Associate of KWM, who will provide key insights into the current procedures and challenges facing investors, as well as immediate and projected impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on Chinese outbound investment.  This is an opportunity to hear what Chinese investors are taking into consideration when looking across the shore, and what this means for businesses in Australia.

Key discussion points include:

  • What impact has COVID-19 had on Chinese outbound investment?
  • What capital controls do Chinese investors need to consider when investing in Australia?
  • What other outbound approvals and processes are involved, and who are the regulators?
  • What is the Chinese Government’s current attitude towards outbound investment, particularly in light of the ongoing global pandemic?
  • What are the biggest challenges and how can those be overcome?
  • Is there still a “China premium” compared to investors from other jurisdictions?
  • What can we do better at our end to assist?
  • How is FIRB perceived by Chinese investors?
  • How do we see Chinese outbound investment playing out over the next 6-12 months?
