This sit-down lunch event at the Ritz Carlton Perth, made possible with the support of Special Event Sponsor FMG, brings focus to the concept of soft diplomacy through mediums such as Sport, Cinema and the Arts to decision makers in WA. In a season where the Australia China relationship is fraught with challenges, we believe this discussion is timely.

Andrew Hunter

Currently Strategic Adviser to Minderoo Foundation, Andrew Hunter worked as General Manager (China Engagement) at Port Adelaide Football Club between 2015 and 2020. He holds a Master of Philosophy (Asian Studies) from The University of Adelaide. A former professional athlete and national team representative in indoor volleyball, Andrew previously worked in the Office of Premier Weatherill as senior adviser for international engagement. He has written over 100 opinion pieces for the Lowy Institute, Canberra Times, Adelaide Review, InDaily, Adelaide Advertiser and the Australian. Camille Chen

Camille Chen has 15+ years international co-production and creative content delivery experience, as writer, producer and director operating in both China and Australia. Camille has sophisticated knowledge of Asian markets, including Asian cultural values and mindsets. Her award-winning debut feature film Little Sparrows (2010) was described as “nuanced and heartrending”, “intelligently conceived” and “brilliantly written." Camille co-founded the Legend Media Group, a Perth-based independent entertainment company with a strong focus on capitalising on the opportunities offered by the rising Chinese market. As the Executive Creative Director, Camille is responsible for developing and building Legend's film and television project pipelines and creating new growth opportunities.

Zhou Xiaoping

Zhou Xiaoping is a Melbourne-based artist and curator, born and educated in China. Since 1988 he has been actively engaged with Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land and the Kimberley. He has created a unique artistic style by incorporating his new Aboriginal experiences into the traditional Chinese classic painting that he had learnt in China. Chinese and Aboriginal arts and cultures meet in his artworks, generating a new aesthetic while telling his story in Australia. In the past 30 years, he has made extraordinary achievements for Australia-China cultural exchanges, including two major exhibitions of Xiaoping's collaboration with the late Jimmy Pike resulting in the first exhibition of Aboriginal art work at Hefei Jiuliumi Art Museum, Hefei, China in 1996, and then at the National Gallery of China in 1999, and “Trepang: China and the Story of Macassan--Aboriginal Trade” project, both exhibited at The Capital Museum in Beijing and the Melbourne Museum in 2011. The international award-winning documentary film “Ochre and Ink”, about his story, was broadcast on ABC1 Australia, in 2012.
