A Unified Approach to Australia-China Relations with Gladys Liu MP & Lord Mayor Sally Capp

14 Jul 2020

ACBC Vic is proud to host prominent Chinese-Australian member of federal parliament, Gladys Liu MP, and our Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, in conversation with Virginia Birrell, CEO, ACBC Vic

ACBC Victoria is delighted to host two prominent voices in the Australia-China community, the first female Member of Parliament of Chinese origin, Gladys Liu MP and the first female to be directly elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne, Sally Capp, for this exclusive online event.

The continued effects of COVID-19 have seen not only a global health crisis like never before, but also multi-faceted economic and social impacts. Increased political and societal tensions have resulted in both the Chinese Ministries for Tourism and Education advising citizens against travelling to Australia due to “an alarming increase” in racial discrimination.

Australia’s Federal Government has rejected that assertion, however the lasting impact to the tourism and international student sector has many concerned.

With media increasingly focussed on the division in the Australia-China relationship rather than what brings us together, this event will discuss what the bilateral business community can do to ease the situation emphasising a meaningful, constructive and unified approach.

At the most basic level, the Australia-China relationship is people to people, business to business, friend to friend. ACBC firmly supports the recent campaign co-ordinated by the Chinese Australian Forum #AustraliaWelcomesYou as part of a unified approach from Australian universities and businesses to elevate the voices of ordinary people above the heated political and media fray.

Join ACBC Vic for this one-hour online Q&A session in conversation with Lord Mayor Sally Capp and Gladys Liu MP to understand what has been done locally and at the federal government level to alleviate racism and to be part of a constructive approach to the Australia-China relationship.

This event will be conducted in both English and Chinese with remote simultaneous interpreting, generously provided by ACBC Vic members, Chin Communications.

Speakers:

Gladys Liu, Federal Member for Chisholm

Proud Melburnian
Gladys has been a Melbourne local since 1985, when she uprooted herself from her birthplace of Hong Kong to study speech pathology at La Trobe University. She barracks for the Carlton Blues and became an Australian citizen in 1992, one week before the birth of her first child, Derek. Gladys has been passionate about making Australia a better place to live ever since.

Small Business Owner
Gladys has been the co-owner of two restaurants and opened her own private speech pathology practice in 2000, running it full-time before she made the move into politics as an adviser to the then Victorian Leader of the Opposition, Ted Baillieu. Her experience running her own small businesses have taught her first-hand the importance of strong economic management in improving the lives of everyone in our community.

Mum
Gladys is a proud single mother and has raised two high-achieving children on her own. Her son Derek is a management consultant at Bain and Company and has recently completed an MBA at Harvard Business School. Her daughter Sally graduated from Princeton and currently works for a global company as a strategy manager for Australia, New Zealand and Japan. She is also an Australian U18 Girls Chess Champion and represents Australia in Ultimate Frisbee. While her childrens’ careers have taken them far from home, she looks forward to spending quality time with them when she can.

Advocate
Gladys is strongly passionate about being an advocate in Parliament for people with hearing loss, having been deaf in her left ear since childhood. She believes in the importance of education as a great equaliser, and is committed to being a voice for people from migrant backgrounds. Having come from a background of domestic violence, she is also passionate about being a voice for women and children in difficult situations and helping them to get the help they need.

Federal Member for Chisholm
In 2019, Gladys decided that she wanted to give back to the community that she had called home for over 30 years. She was elected in May 2019 to the 46th Parliament of Australia for the seat of Chisholm, in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne. She is committed to hearing the concerns of everyone living in Chisholm and is working hard to make sure their voices are heard in Parliament.

Sally Capp, Lord Mayor of Melbourne

Sally Capp was elected Lord Mayor of Melbourne in May 2018 and was the first woman to be directly elected as Lord Mayor.

Sally was also the first woman to hold the post of Agent-General for Victoria in the UK, Europe and Israel. She has also served as the CEO for the Committee for Melbourne and Victorian Executive Director of the Property Council of Australia.

Sally began her career as a Solicitor, after completing Law (Hons) and Commerce degrees at the University of Melbourne.
