On April 8, NAB hosted the launch of the NAB/ACBC Australia China Trade Report in Melbourne. With a diverse selection of industries from the 230 attendees present, the event was a fitting platform to hear high profile speakers and stimulating discussion on the benefits of trade with China.
ACBC Victoria President, Jason Chang, convened the proceedings, which saw State Minister for Trade, The Hon Adem Somyurek highlight the growing sophistication of Australian companies participating in the increasingly more consumer driven China market. Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China, Mr Song Yumin, reflected on the ‘Silk Road Spirit’ of peace, cooperation, inclusiveness and mutual learning as a foundation that defines the bilateral relationship, while NAB Business State General Manager, Mr Paul Collins, emphasised the patient and disciplined long-term strategy required when doing business with China.
To conclude, a panel session was convened by ACBC National CEO Ms Martine Letts, in which Mr Damien Toohey (Qenos Pty Ltd), Ms Belle Jerusalem (UnionPay) and Mr David Olsson (King & Wood Mallesons) took part in a lively discussion. Taking questions from the audience, the panellists stressed the importance of relationships and the opportunities for inbound finance while heeding that Australia must take advantage of its China relationship now given the competition in the global market.
