Media Release: Canberra Networking Day at Parliament House 26 June 2019

24 June 2019

Business Leaders Gather to Discuss Australia-China Relationship in Canberra

Australian and Chinese business leaders will gather in the nation’s capital this week for the Australia China Business Council’s signature annual event, Canberra Networking Day in Parliament House on Wednesday 26 June.  They will be joined by senior Chinese and Australian Government figures, including His Excellency Cheng Jingye, Chinese Ambassador to Australia, the Hon. Senator Simon Birmingham, Federal Trade Minister, the Hon Madeleine King, Shadow Trade Minister and the Hon John Brumby AO, ACBC National President.

Canberra Networking Day (CND) is the Australia China Business Council's annual member-only event held in Canberra. Hosted each year with the support of the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT), and the Chinese Embassy, CND has been firmly established as the premier annual event in the Australia-China bilateral business calendar.

ACBC CEO Helen Sawczak said: ‘CND is a unique opportunity for Australia’s China-engaged business community to meet, to hear from our nation’s leaders, and to contribute to the national conversation at the highest levels.’

National President of ACBC, the Hon. John Brumby AO, said: ‘This year’s CND could not come at a more important time.  Australia has a freshly re-elected government, returned on the promise of keeping the economy strong.  ACBC members know that this will require a close, constructive and ever-deepening engagement with our largest trading partner, China.’

The most recent statistics from the IMF show that in Purchasing Power Parity (PPP) terms, China’s economy is now approximately 25 per cent larger than that of the US.  Despite China’s growth slowing to 6.6 per cent last year, China still adds the equivalent of Australia’s entire economy to its GDP every 18 months.

ACBC will be releasing two reports at this year’s Canberra Networking Day:

The Australian Brands in China (ABC) Index Report 2019, produced by Digital Crew and the Monash Business School, surveys over 9000 Chinese consumers on their perceptions of 102 brands.  It is an important insight into the contemporary Chinese consumer’s perception of what Australia has to offer. Another report, The Impact of the Significant Investor Visa (SIV) Program - a long-term proposition for Australia produced in partnership with Deloitte Private and written by Deloitte Access Economics, examines a program that has, since its inception in 2012, attracted more than $10 billion of new investment into the country. Click Here

CND will feature keynote addresses by Members of Parliament as well as senior business and government leaders in discussions on topics ranging from foreign investment, Chinese consumption and people to people connections through art, sport and education.

Canberra Networking Day 2019 is sponsored by Moelis, MinterEllison, Swisse, ANZ Bank, Digital Crew, and PowerfulPoints.
