Event Recap - Setting Up and Expanding Your Business in China

16 October 2017

Setting up your business in China, and how to manage and minimise risks was the topic of our roundtable with Mr Arie Schreier, General Manager of the PTL Group (China) on 16 October.

Arie’s presentation covered aspects such as the China opportunity; the challenges of operating in China; different models of operation in China; and preparing for the China market.

With regards to opportunities, Arie pointed to trends such as health and beauty, entertainment, intelligent manufacturing and the internet economy, as well as the development of sustainable agriculture and its digitalisation. He also underlined the impact of the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement, as well as the potential offered by cross-border e-commerce.

One study has shown that 2,000 cross-border shoppers in China were 1.6 times more likely to associate ‘health and nutrition’, and 2.5 times more likely to associate ‘natural’, with Australia over the US, Germany, Japan and South Korea. This opens up opportunities for brand positioning that is clearly differentiated from other cross-border leaders. Further, the China market with its fast moving and expanding middle class offers the chance to tap into the preference for healthier and more natural Australian products.

Relating to risk minimisation, Arie emphasised the importance of protecting your brand; choosing the right business model, and the right employees and manager; as well as the establishment of a control and supervision mechanism. Registration of domain name, brand name, patents and protection of IP are also crucial.

Arie’s presentation concluded by outlining investment challenges and a method developed by PTL to protect your business in China.

ACBC Victoria thanks Arie for his presentation, and we extend our warm thanks to all those who attended.
