Event Recap - ACBC Victoria 2017 Annual General Meeting 2017

19 October 2017

ACBC Victoria held our 2017 Annual General Meeting last week on 19 October at the Investment Centre in Melbourne. The meeting provided the opportunity for our members to hear about our activities over the past 12 months and to learn about our future direction.

Chaired by ACBC Victoria President, the Hon Ken Smith, the meeting began with a welcome and highlighted a productive and busy 12 months for the Victorian branch, which has seen us continue to expand our offerings to members, consolidate our strengths and further build on what we do best – assisting Victorian businesses to grow their opportunities with China.

Our calendar of events over the past year has included 60 functions, attracting over 3,400 attendees. This program has been supported by our sector specific working groups which bring a high level of expertise to the process of curating our business events and thought leadership. Given our continued level of activity, in the last three years we have now welcomed over 12,000 people to nearly 200 functions in Victoria – ranging from roundtables to forums to networking and business matching and more.

These figures provide an idea of the scale of our business, the connectivity we have with the Melbourne business community and the reasons why we are so well known as the premier organisation in the Australia-China space in Victoria.

The formal part of the meeting then began including the President’s Report which noted staff contributions, events, working group activities, branch initiatives, strategic relationships, branch partnerships and supporters, as well as the engagement of our members.

This was followed by the Treasurer’s Report highlighting the positive growth of the branch and continued strong financial position.  It was noted that 41% of our income is derived from membership, 43% from sponsorship and 14% from income from our events.  Our operation and direction over the next 3 years will be focussed on during a strategy planning session to be held in November.

Following the financial reporting, the official proceedings covered the election of the Victorian Executive Committee (ExCo) Members. There were no ExCo members retiring this year and we were pleased to accept three new nominations: Laura Mattiazzi, Head of Asia Business Development, NAB; Mark O’Sullivan, CEO, Royal Agricultural Society of Victoria; and Charles Qin OAM, Managing Director and Chief Interpreter, Chin Communications.

The hard work carried out on behalf of our Branch by the Hon Ken Smith over the last 12 months was acknowledged and we congratulate him on his re-election as President of ACBC Victoria.  Vice Presidents David La Ferla, Charles Curwen, On Kit Tam, Liming Huang and Bruce Sheng were re-elected and we received one additional nomination for Vice President from Tom Parker. Ying Hou was re-elected as Treasurer of ACBC Victoria.   The work during 2016/17 of our Vice Presidents and Treasurer was gratefully acknowledged and Tom Parker was warmly welcomed as a new Vice President.

The meeting was closed at 4.50pm. The evening concluded with a networking drinks function featuring a brief address from ACBC National Chairman, the Hon John Brumby AO.

ACBC Victoria warmly thanks the Victorian Government for providing the venue for our meeting. Finally, we kindly thank our members for taking part in this year’s annual general meeting and for their ongoing support of ACBC Victoria.
