Event Recap - China Economic and Financial Market Update - Painting a Picture of the Middle Kingdom

01 June 2017

On 1 June, ACBC Victoria in partnership with NAB hosted the China Economic and Financial Market Update – Painting a Picture of the Middle Kingdom seminar at NAB’s Melbourne office.

Guests were welcomed by Mr Justin Daffy, Director of Business Markets at NAB, followed by Ms Christy Tan, Head of Markets and Strategy and Research for Asia at NAB, who delivered the keynote address.

Christy provided thorough insight into the various internal and external factors impacting China’s gradual economic slowdown amidst reform efforts. China’s exposure to the overall global environment, together with the performance of key international markets was evaluated by Christy in both determining the future demand for Chinese goods and services and assessing risk from the Australian business perspective.

In referencing key macroeconomic factors including Chinese property pricing, consumption trends and the rise of middle income expenditure, Christy’s advice pointed toward listening closely to government and ensuring that relevant professional advice is sought to carefully manage exposure.

The keynote was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Mr Mark Burgess, Senior Advisor and Non-Executive Chairman and Director at Yarra Capital Management. Panellists included Mr Andrew Fei, Senior Associate at King & Wood Mallesons; Professor He-Ling Shi, Associate Professor, Department of Economics at Monash University; and Professor On Kit Tam, Professor of Finance, who each offered valuable insight and commentary on China’s economy and financial markets and implications for Australian investors.

ACBC Victoria warmly thanks both the keynote and panellists for their time and expertise. We also kindly extend our thanks to NAB for partnering with us in this event.
