EVENT RECAP: Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Julie Bishop MP speaks in WA on the New Columbo Plan
28 August 2015
The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade today arranged for the Minister for Foreign Affairs the Hon Julie Bishop MP to speak to a group of Diplomat, University and Industry delegates at The University of Western Australia and there was a good representation of people from all areas of the community. The ACBC WA were delighted to be invited to the event, with our own ACBC WA Executive Committee member Peter Chong and former Columbo plan beneficiary meeting our Foreign Minister.
The Foreign Minister praised the original Columbo plan stating how surprised she is when travelling abroad at how many Presidents, Prime Ministers and business leaders internationally were beneficiaries of the original Columbo plan.
The main objective of the ministers talk was to promote the new Columbo plan's engagement in the region over the coming year, and we heard from some of Western Australia's recent student-beneficiaries of the plan who had been to Hong Kong, Indonesia and Singapore through the plan.
In 2016 all WA Universities will begin to be a part of the plan for the first time.
The New Columbo Plan engages in the Indo Pacific region, spanning from Pakistan in the West to Mongolia in the North to the Marshall Islands in the East.
