ACBC (NSW) Member Spotlight: 5 Minutes with...Harold Neumann from Intertrading Australia

1.       Tell us about your business and how you’ve leveraged your Australia-China connections to build your success in China?  

We have 3 divisions in our business, all of them related to consumables ie household consumables , beverages, snack foods including a  healthy connotation range + health and beauty personal consumables etc. We operate in the high volume low margin high stock turn environment which is really suitable to a family business which we are. The necessity to be versatile, nimble and to have an average out attitude and philosophy is critical. Our  China connection stretches back to  1975  and many of our original connections are still active in the market. We understand and respect the china business and general cultural  drivers so we are happy  with our ongoing in our china relationship.

2.       What does a typical day look like for you and what are you currently working on?

My days are busy with multi-tasking which keeps myself totally business focused and hopefully productive, having been around China wise for a while, I am good with specific problem solving etc.

3.       What would you say are the five key elements for starting and running a successful business in/with China?

Respect, patience, confidence in the china system to stay ahead of the game, willingness to travel, people/product skills.

4.       How do you go about marketing your business in Australia/China and what has contributed to this success?

Create home brands of good value at acceptable quality = repeat orders- the rest is academic.

5.       You have been very successful to date, but there have no doubt been challenges - what’s been your biggest challenge that you have overcome in your business journey with China?

Trying to keep pace with changes in the local market, reading the signs,  and finding the products to fit the retail price points etc.

6.       What’s your motto/mantra?  

Our business succeeds because of our people.
