Dr. Liu Yingjie, Chief Operations Officer, BGI Agriculture Group and President of BGI Millet Co. Ltd. The world’s largest genomics organisation, China-based BGI recently set up an office in Brisbane as part of its growing presence in the Asia Pacific region. BGI aims to pursue collaboration opportunities in research, Agriculture, and Healthcare industries throughout Australia. BGI was founded in 1999, and today has laboratories worldwide and employs more than 5,000 people. Apart from contributing to international projects such as the Human Genome and the 1000 Genomes Projects, BGI was the first in the world to sequence genomes of some key plants (rice, sorghum and millet) and animals. BGI Agriculture aims to improve human health by using genomics to increase global food production and provide precision nutrition. In the past 26 years, Dr. Liu has devoted himself to agriculture and one of his previous roles was Deputy Secretary-General of the Chinese Association of Agricultural Science Societies and is currently the Chairman of the Agricultural Rural Talents Committee. He is also an Adjunct Professor of Renmin University, Northeast Agricultural University and Xinjiang Agricultural University. He is widely published, has a PhD from China Agricultural University and studied rural resources and environmental policy at the Imperial College London.
Consul Jiang Jiqing, Chief of the Economic and Commercial Office, Consulate General of PRC Consul Jiang has more than a decade of experience in trade related areas, bilateral co-operation and working with UN agencies in multi-lateral trade negotiations. She is First Secretary of the Department of International Trade and Economic Affairs, Ministry of Commerce. She works with the Queensland and Chinese business community to strengthen economic relations. She was Chief Coordinator in the negotiation of the China-Peru FTA and a key member of the negotiation team on the China-Korea FTA. She was the Co-chair of Economic Cooperation under the China-ASEAN FTA Negotiation Committee.
Tony Eyres, Senior Investment Specialist, Austrade In this national role, Tony develops and facilitates local investment project opportunities, facilitates productive foreign direct investment projects and works with existing foreign investors to Australia in securing reinvestment. Prior to Austrade, he was as an Executive Director with UBS Global Asset Management, in Sydney. This followed 20 years working in and alongside corporate entities and government agencies in Australia and in New Zealand with Fonterra. He has gained exposure to the highest levels of government, corporations and industry bodies internationally, particularly China, India and Indonesia and Brazil
Phillip Cummins, CFA. Principal, Global Private Equity, QIC Phillip has extensive experience in managing QIC’s Private Equity Program. He has responsibility for Food and Agribusiness and driving QIC’s co-investment and direct investment activity. QIC has a number of investments in the Food and Agribusiness sector globally. QIC manages $5.3b of private equity investments including 25 co-investments and direct investments. Prior to QIC, Phillip was an investment banker. He advised on over US $3.2b of capital raisings and 12 completed M&A transactions. QIC has acquired one of the largest integrated beef producers in Australia with plans to apply operational strategies and grow the business. Australia plays a key role in delivering long term food supply to Asia and QIC is at the forefront of developing a next-generation, direct investment strategy in the Agribusiness sector.
Louis Chien, Director, ASF Group. Born in Shanghai, China, Louis grew up, was educated and worked in the United States and is now based in Sydney. Louis is a strategist, entrepreneur and investor. For ASF, Louis is responsible for directing investment, business development, financial, and operational activities. He has 20+ years of Fortune 100 experience across the Americas, Europe and Asia-Pacific, mostly based in the US and recently Singapore. Louis held various leadership positions within The Procter & Gamble Company and has successfully driven the growth of two consumer brands to over half-billion dollars each, developed venture deals and integrated a multi-million dollar acquisition. ASF is a holding company which identifies opportunities in Australia and co-invests with partners from China, applying its East meets West business perspective and expertise to develop, finance and grow partnerships to deliver long-term success. Agribusiness is a focused area of interest for the company.
Steve Kemp, Head of Organisation, SME, Efic. Steve is responsible for managing Efic’s national team to deliver successful outcomes for SME exporters. Steve has over 20 years banking experience in business, commercial and corporate banking roles. These include senior leadership, marketing and strategy, and general management roles at several major banks. He has completed leadership programs at the Harvard Business School and the AGSM. As Australia’s export credit agency, Efic provides Australian businesses with the financial support they need to help grow their export, offshore investment and onshore export-related business opportunities when their bank is unable to help. With Efic’s support, businesses like Australian Organic Meats and AgriDirect have been able to deliver on significant contracts and grow their business overseas.
Michael Hansel, Partner, HopgoodGanim Lawyers Michael’s expertise is in M&A, capital raisings, due diligence, takeovers, joint ventures, corporate restructuring and private equity transactions. Michael leads HopgoodGanim’s Asia Business team and advises both foreign investors and local exporters on trade and investment issues across numerous industries.
Ryan Jordan, Director Mergers & Acquisitions, PwC Ryan has over 12 year experience with PwC and is part of PwC’s national Deals Agriculture team providing lead advisory services in relation to acquisitions, capital raisings, divestments, joint ventures and strategic relationships. He has a focus on inbound investment and cross border transactions having worked with numerous Chinese and other Asian clients. Ryan travels to China frequently and presented as a key note speaker at the Beef Australia Conference this year on investing into the Australian agriculture industry
