Sydney: Roundtable - The Australian coal sector and Chinese demand

01 July 2013

Offices of Hunt and Hunt, Level 13,Gateway Building, 1 Macquarie Place Sydney

What is happening in today’s coal markets? What does it mean for Coal exports and Australian mines?

The global coal industry is facing a series of challenges with both an overcapacity in production and dwindling demand driving coal prices to their lowest levels in 12 years. This dual dynamic is forcing a number of changes on the industry.

In order to explore what these trends mean for Australian coal producers ACBC will be running a roundtable workshop to unpack some of the trends and opportunities. Issues to be explored include:

  • What is the future of coal prices?
  • Do underperforming mining assets present an opportunity for M&A activity?
  • What is the future of steel demand, and will this reflect in the coal price?
  • How will China's economic transition from construction to consumption lead growth, change demand for coal?
  • What are the long term trends within the industry?

The roundtable workshop will be chaired by the Chair of the ACBC NSW Resources Committee, Susan O ’Rourke.

Susan will be joined by Jonathan Gray as a special guest speaker. Jonathan is a distinguished Australian coal expert having participated in the financing of major coal developments throughout Australia and the supporting infrastructure.
