The Confucius Institute at the University of New South Wales and UNSWriting welcomes back to Sydney the highly acclaimed crime-fiction writer Qiu Xiaolong. Qiu Xiaolong will discuss with Australian Financial Review senior journalist Colleen Ryan the transformation of China over the past three decades, and how through fiction writing, a broader audience can gain insights into contemporary China.

Qiu Xiaolong has gained international profile through his character Inspector Chen who, while investigating the crime, leads the reader through the complicated streets and corridors of power in Shanghai to reveal a dynamic portrait of Chinese life and society.

Qiu Xiaolong writes mainly in English and his books have sold over a million copies and are published in 20 languages. /p

Colleen Ryan was the AFR China Correspondent for six years in Shanghai until 2010 and previously the Editor of the AFR from 1998 to 2002, and Washington Correspondent from 1996 to 1998. She received the Gold Walkley Award for Journalism in 2004.
