Eighteen members of the ACBC Victorian State Committee met with China’s new Ambassador to Australia, His Excellency Chen Yuming at Government House Melbourne on Thursday morning, 9 December 2010.
This ‘getting to know you meeting’ included host Charles Curwen CVO OBE, National Vice-President Ian McCubbin, former Victorian State President Robin Chambers and Executive Director Toni Feddersen.
The meeting was at the Governor’s home reflected the warm and friendly atmosphere ACBC Victoria is well known for.
ACBC members at the meeting raised the key issues governing Australia - China relations at present. These included investment in each other’s country; supply and pricing of Australian energy resources; climate change and emission levels; conclusion of an Australia – China Free Trade Agreement; and Chinese students in Australia.
Ambassador Chen thanked the ACBC for flagging these issues for his attention. He said he would do his utmost to realize the conclusion of a China – Australia Free Trade Agreement during the time he was Ambassador to Australia. The political will to reach an agreement was essential if the FTA was to become a reality. He said he had the will necessary to see the ongoing negotiations bear fruit.
Mr Qiu Deya, Minister Counsellor of the Economic and Commercial Section at the Chinese Embassy in Canberra and Mr Shen Weilian, Chinese Consul-General in Melbourne, were also present at the meeting.
