Perth - Doing Business in China - Perth Report Launch

KPMG has partnered with ACBC, AustCham, the University of Melbourne and Lightspeed Research on the 2018 Doing Business in China Survey. The survey report was launched at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) in Shanghai in early November.

KPMG and ACBC will hold the Perth launch of the report on 17 December. The report is a comprehensive examination of the state of the Australia-China business relationship, outlining the latest findings on how the Australian business community view of the opportunities and challenges of doing business in China.

Robert Williamson CEngA AFIEAust EngExec NER IntETn(Aus) GAICD | CEO | Red River Group

Robert Williamson, CEO of Red River Group, is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of Engineers Australia, and a Graduate Member of Australian Institute of Company Directors. Robert has attained the Stage 3 competency of Engineers Australia (Engineering Executive) and was the recipient of Engineers Australia National Presidents Prize in 2003.
 
Born in Broken Hill and with a career in mining spanning over 40 years, 22 years of which with Rio Tinto, Robert can claim a true mining DNA. Robert has consulted at and visited all the major global Iron Ore provinces including Simandou, as well as some of the world’s largest mines including Kalgoorlie Super Pit and Grasberg mine. Robert has also written and presented papers at leading mining conferences around the world.
 
Robert has fostered China relationships in Government, Finance and Industry, and has led several delegations to China promoting investment in mining and technologies and is active in assisting Chinese Customs (CIQ) with introducing the latest robotic mineral assaying technologies. After a career of 22 years with Riotinto and then Group General Manager at Snowden Mining Consultants, Robert formed Red River Group in 2012 with a firm vision for trade with China. Robert was AMEC’s Executive Advisor China for 5 years. Robert is currently a Director of several Australian companies, and Chief Operating Officer of Lodestone Equities and Toll Resources Management. He has successfully negotiated several large offtake agreements totally over 15 million tonnes per annum and MoU’s with Chinese Steel Mills, Research Institutes and Engineering Groups.
 
Robert is a past Chair of Engineers Australia, and currently sits on the National Congress, WA Division Committee and Professional Standards Board. Robert also Chairs ITEE in WA, is an Executive Committee member of Australia China Business Council (ACBC) in WA and is Deputy Chair of the ACBC Resources sub-committee. Robert also is Vice Chair of the Curtin University Advisory Board of AASQA – Autism Academy for Software Quality Assurance, and a member of the Autism Association WA Business Advisory Council.
 

Michael Faulkner | International Economic Development Adviser | City of Joondalup

Michaels role at the City is to implement the International Economic Development Plan approved by Council in April 2017. The role encompasses the provision of strategic advice to key stakeholders and SME’s on practical International market entry strategies, whilst building on the Government to Government strategic relationships and economic exchange opportunities within a global context. His international experience includes over 25 years within the Corporate Banking and financial services sector in the South East Asian region, across multiple business sectors.
 
Michael has lead a number of successful delegations to China for the City of Joondalup over the past 18 months resulting in:
 
The hosting in September of the ISAP2018 (Innovation in Aged Care) conference in Joondalup which was attended by 60 Aged Care Executives from China. This event will now be held every second year in Joondalup.
  • Secured the set-up of the AMA(WA) International training facility in Joondalup catering for up to 100 International students from China, to undertake a Diploma in Healthcare Management.
  • Secured Investment outcomes totalling A$38m within the aged care sector in Joondalup.
  • Commenced dialogue for the establishment of a Traditional Chinese Medicine clinic in Joondalup.
  • Facilitated the signing of a formal economic exchange agreement between the city of Joondalup and the City of HuZhou enabling exchanges between key stakeholders within the Joondalup precinct.
Michael holds a Master of International Business and lectures in International Negotiation at Edith Cowan University. He has further qualifications in business, marketing and training and is currently undertaking a PhD candidature with Edith Cowan University, School of Business & Law.
 
Michael is also a representative member of CCCWA, ACBC and the AIBC, and a certified member of the China Ready and accredited program, and Fellow of the Australian Institute of Management.
 

Christopher Neil | Managing Director | Orient Group

Christopher Neil is a senior Australian businessman who has lived and worked in Beijing for over 23 years since first visiting China in 1991. Originally from Perth, Christopher studied Mandarin Chinese at the Beijing Language and Culture University in 1992 and a bachelor of arts in Asian Studies at Curtin University 1995.
 
Christopher’s career has spanned managerial positions in businesses with industries spanning media, hospitality and tourism, mining, agribusiness, FMCG, education, distribution, sales, marketing and advisory.
 
From 1992 – 1996 Christopher traveled frequently to China as representative of a China focused Australasian travel wholesaler and business consultancy, working closely with China International Tourism Service (CITS) and the Australian Trade Commission (AusTrade).  He then joined The Great Wall Sheraton Hotel, Beijing from 1996 – 1998 in various hotel management roles.
 
From 1998 Christopher spent 2 years with Carlton United Breweries (CUB) - Foster’s China, based in Beijing with responsibility for marketing and distribution in northern China. Christopher also worked in Beijing with a United States international advisory firm from 2000 – 2002, running a beverage distribution company in Hebei province for Pepsi, market entry for Pennzoil and establishing the first KFC franchise on the mainland.
 
In 2002 Christopher established a consultancy, Innovative & Interactive (I&I China).  Assisting local and foreign companies to develop marketing campaigns, strategic advisory, intellectual property issues and due diligence for fortune 500 companies in China and South East Asia.  Christopher also successfully assisted numerous Chinese state owned enterprises and their affiliate companies with their outbound investment strategies, partnerships and foreign relations.  
 
Christopher founded Orient Group in 2011 as a boutique advisory headquartered in Beijing with satellite offices in Hong Kong, Hanoi, Los Angeles, London and Australia, and continues to work on projects with international trade, investment, consulting and assisting companies in various industries including mining/resources, agribusiness/dairy/fisheries, education, distribution and marketing.  
 
Christopher was director general of a Vietnamese joint venture mining company, Quang Throng Limited Liability Companies And Mineral, appointed by the Chinese partners from 2012 – 2013.  In 2013 Christopher chaired the 7th Asian Mining Partnering Forum in Beijing.  He was one of the handpicked delegates for Australia Week in China in April 2014, METS delegation.  Christopher was invited to participate as a speaker at the Global Service Outsourcing Summit held in Qingdao, China during June 2014 hosted by the Ministry of Commerce and was the keynote speaker at the Bauer Media (Australia) conference in Shanghai October, 2014.  In 2015 Christopher was featured in the Asialink country starter pack for China supported by The University of Melbourne and the Myer Foundation.  Christopher was the keynote speaker at the Pathways Licensee Services (Australia) conference held in Hong Kong April, 2016 and again a participant in Australia Week in China April 2016, with the agribusiness delegation. In 2016 Christopher was the CEO China for See3 Technologies (aquaculture technologies) and during 2017 he acted as advisor to the general manager for Rubicon Water – China (water resources management) and he currently acts as the CEO China for AEYONS Pty Ltd, (livestreaming music education company), additionally he holds numerous directorships in various industries.
 
Christopher has extensive experience advising international companies on their strategic engagement with China and has strong relationships with central and local governments, various state-owned enterprises, multinational corporations and high net worth individuals.  He has resided in Beijing since 1996 and continues to travel extensively throughout China and the region.
