They will be joined by our distinguished panelists who will discuss how to develop the China markets and investment relationships. The Panel will also share insights on emerging areas of investment interest from China and how to identify investment models which can assist Australian companies access the global market.

Marcus Simpson - CFA, Head of Global Private Capital, QIC
A consortium of QIC, Pagoda Investment and Goldman Sachs Principal Investment have signed an agreement to acquire a majority interest in Icon Group, Australia's fastest growing cancer care provider.  This deal is part of a strategy to help Australian companies grow their exports to Asia in a range of sector including health care and agribusiness. Marcus founded and manages QIC’s private equity program of $5.0bn AUM globally in funds, co‐investments, directs and direct secondary fund interests. He is at the forefront of a new private equity investment model reflected in a paper co-authored by Josh Lerner and Hugh MacArthur: The Next Generation Private Equity InvestorPrior to founding QIC’s program, Marcus was Chief Executive, North America, Altius Associates Ltd, establishing its US operation in 2000. Prior to that Marcus worked for the Virginia Retirement System, a US public pension plan with assets of US$62 billion. Marcus founded its non‐US portfolio and then became Head of Private Equity. He also worked in the London office of the Bankers Trust Company where he structured a number of buy‐out financings and worked on corporate restructurings.  Marcus is Chairman Emeritus of the Institutional Investors Roundtable, an international community of large, long‐term institutional investors seeking to collaborate on private market investment.

James Leong - Managing Partner and Chairman, Pagoda Investment (an investment firm based in Beijing)
Mr. Leong chairs Pagoda’s IC and is responsible for over two dozen of successful investments via growth capital and cross border buy-outs ranging across the TMT, Consumer, Healthcare and Education sectors (Didi, Meituan, Tutor, SumScope, etc.). Mr. Leong has over 25 years of experience in the investment industry at senior positions with global investment banks such as Credit Suisse and JP Morgan as well as at major sovereign wealth institutions including CIC and QIC. Mr. Leong was Deputy Head of CIC’s private equity group and Senior Special Advisor at QIC responsible for its China private equity strategy.  He graduated from Macquarie University with a Master’s Degree of Applied Finance.
 
Justin Howden - Head of Government Relations, Public Policy, Scientific Development and Community Engagement, Swisse Wellness and Global Government Affairs and Industry Development, H&H Group
Investment by the Chinese company Biostime International (now H&H Group) in Swisse Wellness has accelerated Swisse’s expansion into the Chinese market by providing the on the ground capability and capacity that could have taken a decade otherwise. Swisse has also been able to invest significantly in scientific research. Over the last 5 years Justin has built and led Swisse’s Government Affairs and Industry Development team. This includes global and local public policy contribution on health, trade, innovation, advanced manufacturing policies and the development of the strategic science program of validation and clinical trials with CSIRO, SWINBURNE and Peking Universities. The team also leads the groups’ sustainability program, and the Celebrate Life Foundation, the community arm of Swisse Justin entered marketing at FMCG leader Kraft Foods, then State Manager Meadow Lea, National Marketing Manager for Bonlac/Fonterra ultimately as Regional Manager Asia for Fonterra. As an ‘intrapreneur’ he revived and established new business divisions and has led teams across emerging markets such as China, ASEAN and the Middle East. After 15 years in Consumer Packaged Goods he joined Business Victoria as General Manager for ASEAN Investment group, progressing to GM International Business including leading the Victorian Government’s network of overseas trade and investment offices. He graduated in the first cohort of the ‘Masters in Entrepreneurship and Innovation’ from Swinburne.
 
Mike Hughes - Vice President Landbridge Group
Mike is responsible for Landbridge’s operations in Australia and New Zealand, including Queensland based oil and gas company WestSide Corporation, Darwin Port and the Hotel and Industry Park developments in Darwin which aim to increase Australian exports to China and Asia.  Mike has more than 25 years’ experience in the international energy and infrastructure sectors.  Mike has a track record of building and operating successful onshore and offshore oil and gas and infrastructure businesses in South East Asia and Australia and has spent over 10 years based in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore. Mike has an MA in Mathematics from Oxford University.
 
Stuart Cioccarelli - Lead Partner, Brisbane office, ShineWing Australia
