Australian Beef Ban Lifted

By: ACBC National

Good news reported yesterday that China has lifted its temporary ban on some sources of Australian beef, just three months after it was imposed.  Six abattoirs, reflecting 30 per cent of Australia’s beef trade with China, were affected by the ban, which came after Chinese authorities claimed to find a labelling error on Australian beef products.

The speed of this resolution is testament to the strength of the Australia-China relationship.  Trade Minister Steve Ciobo, who was personally involved in the resolution process, told the Australian Financial Review that similar issues involving Germany and Canada had affected those countries for up to 18 months.

ACBC members who attended our Australia China Economic and Trade Cooperation Forum (ACETCF) in Sydney earlier this year may remember Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Chinese Premier Li Keqiang speaking of an agreement they had signed, that very day, to give Australia full access to the Chinese market for chilled beef—the first country in the world to have such access.

China is now Australia’s fourth largest beef export market, worth $866 million in the last financial year.  Strong inter-governmental relations of the kind promoted by ACBC mean that bumps in the road of the kind we have seen in the last three months can be quickly resolved.
