A Tasmanian ACBC chapter that is formally part of the National ACBC and is dedicated to promoting business and trade between Tasmania, Australia and the People’s Republic of China.

A Brief History

During the early months of 2014, the ACBC National Executive discussed the possibility of establishing a presence in Tasmania. This idea was taken up by the local business community and working closely with the Department of State Growth & the national executive of the ACBC, a Tasmanian branch was formed in the beginning of November 2014

Tasmania & China

In 1981 Tasmania and Fujian Province entered into a Sister State agreement. Ever since the Province has enjoyed strong ties with Tasmania many of which have led to business and trade opportunities.

Chinese people began settling in Tasmania in the 19th Century particularly in the North-East and West Coast of Tasmania.

Grange Resources is a Chinese owned mineral resources company that has been in operation in Tasmania for around 50 years.

Hydro Tasmania has been a world renewable energy leader for 100 years. Hydro has forged many successful partnerships with Chinese power companies. Most recently Hydro has had a long term and successful partnership with Shenhua Clean Energy Power Company.

Both the University of Tasmania & Government Education and Training International have strong and proud records of engaging with China. This includes both outbound and inbound students and teaching programs.

Chinese business and peoples account for the largest share in Tasmanian’s international visitor numbers. Figures released in 2012 showed a 50% increase, 2013 a further 50% increase, and in 2014 an over 61% increase in visitation by Chinese citizens.

There are several existing Agriculture and Aquaculture interests in Tasmania with Chinese businesses including essential oils, beef and dairies.

The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery has substantial collection of Chinese artefacts and artworks, and strong connection with China in the arts.

Objectives of ACBC Tasmania Branch

  • To provide opportunities for our members to develop networks and collaborate with their peers;
  • To provide members with useful market data to enhance their China engagement;
  • To provide members with useful market data to enhance their China engagement;
  • To provide education and services to develop a China focused and China capable business community;
  • To encourage and facilitate opportunities for our members to meet with senior Australian and Chinese business people, politicians and officials;
  • To bring the interests and concerns of our members to the attention of the Australian and Chinese Governments and other policy makers and administrators in Australia and China;
  • To support the promotion of Tasmania’s commercial interests in China;
  • To encourage and facilitate education, training and cultural connections with China.
